SPINAL DECOMPRESSION

There is a lot of information that covers the treatment called "Spinal Decompression". I am going to give you the condensed “Readers Digest" version in three paragraphs.

The spine has 24 bones separated by 23 cushions of cartilage called discs. The discs are made up of two parts. An outside hard part called the “annulus” and an inside soft part called the “nucleus.  The annulus is like an onion cut in half. Ring upon ring of cartilage. The nucleus is located in the center of the onion. Behind the disc is the canal of the spine. Nerves from the brain travel in the canal . These nerves make up the "spinal cord". The nerves then branch off the cord and pass  through holes between the spinal bones. The nerves continue on to all the various parts of the body.

Pressure from the soft nucleus cracks and breaks the fibers of the annulus. This breaking causes pain and discomfort in the corresponding area of the spine. As the breaking increases, the disc begins to bulge. Large enough bulges put pressure on the nerve causing pain and discomfort away from the spine, like into the arm or leg. Here is where the problem remains.

By gently pulling the bones of the spine apart, (spinal decompression) the soft nucleus moves back toward it’s normal position allowing the fibers of the annulus to heal. This decompression removes pressure from the nerve and reduces pain.  Medication, exercise and hoping won’t decompress the disc.

Knowing which disc is causing pain,  knowing how long to treat, and knowing which type of decompression to use requires knowledge and experience. That’s where the doctors of Meyer Chiropractic Center come in. We’ve spent years studying ways to improve the lives of people with spinal disc problems. From that research, we have found two different types of decompression therapy to help you. Let us evaluate your condition...

... and help return you to a more enjoyable life.
